The Astronomical Clock

Built into the wall, above the front door of Hogg Hall, was the Great Astronomical Clock. The clock was 20 feet in diameter with three separate copper dials revolving at different speeds in opposite directions. If the 6th Earl looked at it for too long it always made him feel dizzy and sight of the device often gave him a nosebleed.

The clock displayed the date, the month, the position of the sun in the ecliptic, the phases of the moon and the twelve signs of the zodiac. It also showed when the apples needed picking in the orchard, the menstrual cycles of the female inhabitants of the house, and when the River Turd was at its highest point. The clock told you everything in fact, except for what time it was.
